Here are some updated pics that I took today. Now remember we were not worried about the gaps being perfect. We just wanted them close so we could adjust them later. We mainlt=y fitted everything in place so the fender aprons would be in the proper spot. Also the hood hight we are not worried about. We will not be useing the original hood hinges. They will not fit in place because of the hydroboost. We just needed it to sit straight between the fenders. All these body peices will be coming back off after the fender aprons are welded in.

This is what the right side fender apron fit like before I took it back out and did some tweeking to the top.

Here it is after tweeking the top. Now it fits under the fender the way it is supposed to fit.

Here it is all set and ready to be welded in place.

My welder was not available today so the fender aprons being welded in is on hold until he is ready. But I did finish cleaning up the area's to be welded. So  today I pulled the rear and the rear leaf springs. We removed the springs so they can be cleaned and painted. Also it will make it allot easier to paint up the undercarriage of the car.

You consider a retro fit IRS unit? That would complete the whole idea of later model with classic look. I've just found that leaf springs in a mustang leave much to be desired.

The leaf springs are going back in for now. I am eventually going to go with a coil over set up from Rod and Custom Motorsports. They make a complete bolt in set up. They are the people I bought my front end kit from.

I've seen a couple kits where they tossed the leafs, and ran LCA's from the front leaf spring mount, back to the rearend and I believe they ran a watts link with it. It was pretty neat. The leafs in our 65 matt, were two different heights, and had two different amounts of leafs. lol. The car would like, drive side ways, sway, and about kill you. We pulled them off and couldn't believe someone put them on.

My 67 has the Grab-A-Track suspension under it, which is basically a cheap performance suspension. Still has the orginal deisgn, just new leafs and shocks and swaybars and coils in teh front and all that and I have to say that I'm actually pretty pleased with it. I planned on doing coilovers eventually, but its a new suspension that honestly has nothing wrong with it. I've pushed it pretty hard before just to see what it was like and the tires were the holding back part. Now I wasn't on a road coarse or anything, but some twistes in the middle of nowhere with a crotch rocket riding my arse... He kept up, but he def didn't ride me during that little bit. lol

The leaf springs in the car are 22 years old. They might have 1000 miles on them. I put them in the car in June 1987 when I came home from the military. In August 1987 I took the car off the road. But I do need to get a rear sway bar and some sort of traction bars.

I did some cleaning and measuring today. Pulled the fuel tank out and drained out the 25 year old gas, there was about a gallon or so. Looked like piss. I started scrubbing it down and getting it ready to be painted. I also waisted about an hour cleaning up the spring shackles before I said screw this, I am getting new ones.

I also put tires/wheels on the rears and check out the size. The 8.8 rear out of the 03 is about 2.5 inches wider than the 8 inch rear out of the 66. It just might fit the way it sits, but it will be close. I will lose more clearance when there are tires on the wheels.

This is where I left off on the gas tank. I scrubbed it down with a tire brush and dawn dish soap then rinsed it with the hose. After it dried I saw how dirty it still was and went over it with a wire brush.  I did not get as much time to work as I expected today. But a little bit is better than nothing.

As of now I am useing it wether I need to have it shortened, or it fits the way it is. But if I find something more suitable I will keep you in mind.

Well, if the rear end is 2.5" too wide over all, then a Fox body rear end should slide right in.  The fox's are 1.5" shorter than the SN95 and the SN95 are 1.5" shorter than the 99 up models.  So doing the math, a Fox should be right there and they are very cheap to get.  Order some axle brackets from North Racecars and bolt your Mach brakes on to the Fox.  All you would need is a decent set of aftermarket 5 lug axles or a two of the same side ranger axle.
Sorry, just wanted to interject that.  I really like this project, and I saw where you live and it made me chuckle, because I have a 65 coupe and I got it from Eastern PA.  Small world.  Mine was free for hauling it off from Eric Swarr, Swarr Auto.  Anyway, great build, hope my suggestion helps ya.

And your point?

Get an 8.8 out of the new 05-09 mustang.   You can get the whole rearend for way cheap with less then 100 miles on it from newtakeoff.com  A guy i know used that in his 66 and the width is perfect!

IF it is still too wide, you can simply slide fox axles into it and it will shorten up each side by 3/4".  And then use the brackets I linked you too above.  Good luck! Post up more pics, it gives me something to do over here in the sandbox. lol.

for sure dude!  Can't wait to see this.  I have a 65 collecting rust in the back of my shop.  It is really rough, but I want to do something with it when I finally come home to stay.  I am really closely following this build to get ideas and see what works and such.  Keep going, it's gonna be sweet when you are finished!

I screwed around with the gas tank yesturday for about 4 hours trying to clean it in preperation for paint. 1st I just tried washing it with soap and water, that proved futile. Then I went to a wire brush, it worked o.k. but would have taken forever. Then I tried my air drill with a wire wheel on it. That worked pretty good but the air compressor had a hard time keeping up. So since there was paint under all the 43 years of dirt, I tried paint remover. Put it on and let it sit for about 15 minutes, and it kinda worked. So I did another application of the paint remover, and that did nothing else to clean it. So I went back to the air drill and wire brush method, that worked the best. About an hour later I was done.

Finished product. This is the B.S. work that nobody wants to do but needs to be done.

I also have a line on a Ford 9 inch out of a 65 Fastback that is nothing more than a shell of rust, We will see how that works out.

I would rather go with a 9 inch over a 8.8, but they are harder to find and more expensive to build.
