Speedometer malfunction?

First of all, I haven't posted on this forum in years... and honestly am surprised that it is still up(don't come for me, Facebook took over the world).

Secondly, I just wanna know the relationship between my speedometer not working and my car shutting of when I downshift? Before I start really looking into things, are these two things related at all? It was suggested to me that it might be and I'm curious how it could be.

You need to replace the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
It's on the trans on the drivers side.
